Monthly Archives: July 2010

>Hair Growth Update: November 2009- July 2010 (7 months period)

>Hello Blog lovers! I just wanted to share with you guys my progress so far over a seven months time period. As some of you may or may not already know, I’ve been using Doo Gro Products on my hair. I started using them in January of this year and over the past month since I’ve been low on my product (time for a beauty supply store haul) I’ve switched it up a bit. I just wanted you guys to see my progress so far from start to finish and check out my little mini video that I published on my youtube channel last week.  Subscribe to the channel some great vids coming up soon!!

>Make-up Haul: Ulta, Elf, and Meet Mark Cosmetics

Hello Blog Lovers! I just wanted to share with you guys my miniature haul. I’ve been doing a lot of shopping lately (more than usual) and I have been enjoying every minute of it! Ulta just had this huge beauty sale. Everything in the store was on sale so I took advantage of the sale. This is my first time shopping at Ulta and I must say I love the store. I would always think that this is not the store for me because they were so expensive. You can’t judge a book by its cover or a store by it’s prices until you read the book or make a purchase in the store. I was able to get some of their mineral shadows, nail polishes, and eye pencils. Check it out!
The color for this shadow is Cannyon kind of reminds me of GA red clay but more so a brick red. This is a shimmery eyeshadow.
This eyeshadow color is called Jade it’s shimmery green shadow I would describe it as a golden green eyeshadow.
This eyeshadow color is called  Quartz it reminds me of pennies. Its a shimmery copper.

This eyeshadow color is called Petal. It’s a rosy pink shimmery shadow.

This a Shadow/Blush. It has golden flakes in it and gives a shimmery effect. I’ve been using this on my cheeks. The color is called Seashell.

These eyeliners were one dollar! The colors from top to bottom are Olive, Indigo, and Rasin. Olive and Rasin are shimmery liners and Indigo is a matte color which I love I will probably use these on days when I feel like going simple and just line underneath my eyes.

The nail colors from top (left to right) to bottom are: Blue Steak (my sister used this and it was a very rich royal blue color I ♥ it) Sun Sational (anxious to use this) Plum Perfect (very pretty rich violet purple) Top Coat and Base Coat.

** Two shadows not pictured: Marine and Snow**

I was in Target with my sister and I just happen to run across some E.L.F. Products and I picked up these lip glosses. They were sold three in pack so the price was three for a dollar. I like these although I love using flavored lip glosses (which is not a must but it’s a plus), these lip glosses offer a little lip color and offer great shine to the lips. They are called the Hypershine Lip Gloss, colors were not stated but I would describe them as a rosey pink, sexy peach, and bubble gum pink.
Last but not least my Mark Haul. As everyone may or may not know Avon which has been around for years offers a teen beauty line that consists of make-ups, body scents, face and body products, hair products, jewelry, handbags, accessories, and now clothes and shoes. I was a Mark Rep in 2006 and it was short lived because I just couldn’t find the time. My sister even tried but never really made a go of it either. My mother is now the one that sells Avon and along with Avon comes the title of a Mark Rep as well. I’ve purchsaed a lot in the past from Mark and I loved the product. They were great! This is my first Mark Haul in a long time and lets say I over did it and purchased a lot.
The cute chic Black Avon Bag

I tried my best to make a cute little display of what I purchased. LOL

I wanted to have a compact that I could carry in my purse for an everyday on the go look. I love having a natural glow and keep it simple. So I wanted to have create a brown look. The colors from top to bottom are Biscotti, Espresso,Gioia and Java.  All are shimmery shadows except for Espresso which is a matte brown color.

This is my first bronzer compact. Offers a Golden Glow

Mosaic Blushes (Top to Bottom) Hush Baby and Chica

Marks Infamous Hook up connector Duo’s I purchased (Left to Right) Petal and Rush. Both of these lip glosses are highly pigmented. I love the lip glosses. They are Fan-tab-u-lous!!

I had to get something to hold my shadows and blushes to complete the compact I created so I purchased the mega shadow/blush compact which holds 8 eye shadows, four blushes or a combo of the two. They have compacts that hold 4 eye shadows or two blushes and two shadows or one blush. It comes with brush (es) as well.
All put together. It’s nothing spectacular but it would work for me on day to day basis!
Everything was purchased by me with my money. I am not an affiliate, partner, or representative for any of these companies. Although I was once a Mark rep as a consumer now I stand behind the products that they offer because they are affordable and of excellent quality!!!
Until next time Peace and Blessings

>HTOW: Satin Covered Hair Rollers

This weeks Hair Tool of the Week is the Satin Covered Hair Roller. Everyone at some point has used a sponged hair roller before to add curls to the hair over night.  I remember back in the day when we would use these rollers to put that terrible tight curl in our bangs (tragic). My mother used to make us use end papers to cover the ends of our hair to keep it from breaking off. Did this method help to reduce breakage?? In all honesty it wasn’t as effective. All though the ends were protected the sponge hair roller did just what a sponge would do. Soak up all the moisturizer we placed on our hair the night before. So in the morning the curls were either dry (in appearance) and frizzy.

Satin Covered Hair Rollers are basically the sponge hair roller that is covered in Satin to keep the hair from drying out and breaking. Creating the perfect curl over night without causing damage to the ends is perfect!  When purchasing a roller for bedtime try using the satin roller to help give you sexy voluminous curls!

>HPOW: Sally’s Generic Value Products:Silk Remedy/ Product Review

Hello Blog Lovers and Welcome New Followers! This weeks Hair Product of the Week (which is late) is the Silk Remedy which is a part of Sally’s generic branded products. As some may or may not already know Sally’s Beauty Supply Store offers a complete line of your favorite name brand hair products such as: Paul Mitchell, CHI, Matrix, Artec, Redken and many more just to name a few. This line is a split image of the name brand product and is sold for a cheaper price for the consumer. I just so happened to pick up a bottle a few weeks back and I use it on my hair before I heat style it. I must say that I love it! It leaves my hair soft, shiny, and not weighted down. The smell is great, however it did catch me off guard a bit because it reminded me of one of my ex-boyfriends cologne ( I can’t think of the brand cologne but it’s such a clear replica of the scent). I absolutely love it! My sister loves it as well she got a hold of the product while flat ironing her hair at my house. This product is a splitting image of the CHI Silk Infusion (I’ve of course have not tried the actual CHI brand but if this is a split image I’m content with the generic version, at least until I run out of product). I give this product my ★★★★★ (5 Star Stamp). I love it and if you don’t have any in your bathroom cabinet of hair products you should definitely make the purchase. This product is $9.49 on the Sally’s Beauty Supply Website. So Check out the stats below:

GVP Silk Remedy provides superior shine, tames frizzies and conditions your locks with each application. Enriches hair with pure silk, wheat and soy proteins

  • Leaves hair soft, silky and healthy

>So What’s the Differnce? Dandruff vs. Dry Scalp

Hello Blog lover! I still focusing on the scalp and in this blog post I will discuss the differences between dandruff and dry scalp. There is a major difference and many people have been treating one of the two issues under the misconception that it is one thing and is something totally opposite. Dry Scalp is always mistaken to be Dandruff and because some don’t know the difference they often mistreat the problem making the problem worse.
What’s the Difference?
Dandruff is actually caused by bacteria and is very contagious.  It is a mixture of sebum, sweat, and scalp tissue and is either yellow or orange in color because of the sebum and sweat. It can flake out on the hair or stick to the scalp (this kind of dandruff is called honey comb dandruff) it appears in large areas on the scalp at a time, and is different than dry scalp if you see the two side by side.
Dry Scalp is an over shedding of dead and dehydrated skin cells of the scalp caused by itching, scratching, over combing and dehydration of the sebaceous glands. The shedding is white in color and sometimes there is no bacteria present because the skin has not yet combined it self with the sebum and sweat. Dry Scalp is usually attributed to bad products being used on your hair. Although dry scalp is opposite from dandruff, you can use similar treatments.
Cause of Dandruff
What are the causes of dandruff? Let’s get to the root of the problem:
1. Overactive Sebaceous Gland: I recently discussed what an overactive sebaceous gland was in my Oily hair and Oily Scalp post.  If you have an overactive sebaceous gland you should avoid products that cause waxy build up, hair grease, hair balms, and oily styling products.
2. Bad Hygiene: Yes, bad hygiene can cause dandruff. If you do not wash your hair often you will more than likely develop dandruff because of a bacteria buildup. This build up will sit on the scalp and will mix with your natural sebum and cause dandruff. African Americans are more susceptible to dandruff because of the natural thickness and over curly hair pattern.  Both oil and sweat do not dehydrate form the scalp easily due to the thickness of the hair and will not allow the air to hit the scalp easily.
3. Hair Grease, Oil Balm, Vaseline: I know you guys remember back in the day when we used to scratch our scalps with the comb and grease the scalp with Vaseline. SMH. What was the real reason behind that? Why was is supposed to help with the dandruff but never actually did anything but make the hair look a hot mess? I found the answer to the question as to why it never really did anything for our hair (the reason behind the action remains unknown.

4. Scratching and digging into the scalp: You should never scratch the dandruff or dry scalp on your head because it will make it worse and cause it to spread.  Damage to the scalp from scratching will allow bacteria to get in to the scalp such as the bacteria that causes staff infection amongst others.
5. Sharing Combs and Hats: Because dandruff is contagious you can pass it on to someone else or get it from someone else if you are sharing combs and hats.

Cause of Dry Scalp
1. Low Productivity of Sebum: Believe it or not this is actually true and can be caused by genetics. Your sebaceous glands can work both ways. Your body could produce little to no sebum to tons of sebum, thus resulting in oily scalp and oily hair. If you have Psoriasis you may have a problem with this.  The only differnence in Psoriasis and dry scalp you would have red scaly patches on your scalp. Dry scalp is white in color (occurs when skin cells become dead). You should see a dermatologist for this problem (if you have a low productivity of sebum) Try using a tea tree shampoo and conditioner that will help to keep the hair and scalp moist.

2.  Using Bad Shampoos and Conditioners: Most over the counter shampoos have fillers in them (alcohol and wax) that will leave your hair dry and brittle and without shine. Professional hair products (little to non) contain no fillers and can be used to correct this problem. Using dandruff shampoos on your hair will make the dry scalp worse.

3. Not using conditioner: If you are not using conditioners on your hair for whatever the reason my question is why? I think the majority of us have gotten the idea that conditioning the hair is important. Because shampooing can be drying to the hair it is important that you condition the hair to maintain moisture on both the hair and scalp.Keep this in mind that when it comes to oily scalp you apply your conditioner to only your hair and not your scalp.

Always use products that are formulated to help you and your hair condition. Never use products because they work for others. Steer clear of products that contain alcohol and wax for fillers (this is what helps make the product think in consistency) Never use dandruff shampoo on dry scalp. Figure out what your condition is and treat it accordingly. If you are using something that  is making your scalp dry stop using it and try something else. Same thing goes for your dandruff issue if you have one.

Hope this helps!

>HTOW: Shampoo Scalp Massager

This weeks Hair Tool of the Week is the Shampoo Scalp Massager. I absolutely love this hair tool! It’s not a styling tool of course but its a tool used in the shower or at the salon shampoo bowl to help stimulate the scalp. When you stimulate the scalp you allow the blood to flow to the top of your scalp which helps to stimulate hair growth. I know some people may be thinking how do you use this without breaking my hair off.  Basically what I do (and I will describe this again in the stats below) I lather my hair with shampoo and I use the brush (massager) and in a brushing motion I run it through my hair from the hair line (edges) to the crown of my head. I then do the same thing using the same exact motion in the sides and back of my head. This helps to keep your nails out of your head and off of your scalp. It doesn’t pull the hair or irritate the scalp. It has ball tipped ends so it doesn’t hurt to use it either. Check out the stats on this product below:

The Babyliss Scalp Massage Brush gently massages hair and scalp. Stimulates the hair follicle for healthier hair.

•Thick bristles gently massage and stimulate the scalp for healthy, shiny hair

•Non-slip handle is contoured to fit in the palm of the hand for extra comfort and control

•Distributes styling products evenly throughout hair

The Babyliss Scalp Massaging Brush has a unique contoured shape which conforms to the palm of your hand, allowing your hand to naturally cup the brush. The thick bristles massage the scalp while stimulating the hair follicle for healthy, shiny hair. The shape and style of the brush along with the bristles help to evenly distribute styling products.
This particular scalp massager is only $1.99 at Sally’s Beauty Supply Store. You can find other scalp massagers like the one below at your other local BSS:
